  Chapter Ten

  Mia

Mia couldn't believe how fast time seemed to fly by. Six months ago she'd sat in a courtroom waiting to hear exactly how long Cole would be behind bars for his crimes. Six months. It seemed like it was only yesterday and yet she was almost halfway through her junior year of high school. Ever since the trial ended she'd been in a painting craze. It was the way she let her emotions out so she didn't feel overwhelmed by them.

The paintings were a work of progression. The first ones were very dark. They showcased her mental state so soon after everything had happened. Over time, however, they became a bit lighter. As she worked through her feelings, her paintings became happier images filled with hope. Part of that, she knew, was because of Gage. He'd become so attentive, so affectionate, so protective of her. It made her feel safe and happy. It made her feel like maybe she really did mean more to him than she realized. Maybe, just maybe, he loved her the same way she loved him.

She'd been thinking about his suggestion months ago, about letting others see her work. After some deliberation, and discussion with her twin, who encouraged her as well, she finally decided that maybe it was time after all. She didn't want to try to do her own 'show', she wasn't even sure how to go about setting something like that up, so she'd contacted the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans and set up a gallery showing of her work. Keeping it a secret, until everything was in order, wasn't easy. She wanted it to be a surprise. Once she had the showing scheduled she finally told her family, followed by the rest of the Pard. Then, she headed into New Orleans to Tulane. She wanted to tell Gage in person. He was such a big part of her inspiration, she wanted, no, she needed, him to know how much his support and encouragement lifted her up.

  Gage

Within weeks of moving onto campus, Gage found himself a pledge to Phi Gamma Delta. Remy was already a Delt and Gage, after looking into the different frats on campus, chose to follow in his footsteps. It wasn't easy to get into the fraternity, but then, if frats made it easy everyone would be a member. Sure, there was some hazing, but hell, that was a long-standing practice on college campuses every where. The way Gage saw it, as long as it didn't go to the extreme of putting someone's life in danger, what the hell? People who went off about how it's 'so awful' were fucking pussies.

He loved being a Delt. He had his own room instead of having to share a room with someone else, like he would in a regular dorm. There was such a bond of brotherhood among his fellow Delts that made him feel welcome almost from the start. Okay, sure, he also liked the status of being in a frat. Social status was as much a big deal in college as it was in high school and those in fraternities were on the top rung of the ladder.

His first week as a full Delt he discovered the fraternity was associated with Kappa Alpha Theta. They threw a welcoming party for new Delts as well as new Thetas. Holy fuck, some of the girls were so damn hot. He still felt the pull toward Mia but he was giving her time to finish growing up. When one of the Thetas came on to him, he flashed her a wicked grin and led her off to his room where they had their own private party. He learned, very quickly, that Carrie was very good with her mouth.

  Mia

Mia tried to tone down her nervousness as she approached the frat house of Phi Gamma Delta. It was late afternoon, the air was beginning to turn cooler as fall progressed, and this was the first time she'd actually come to Tulane to see Gage. She usually only saw him on the weekends when he came out to the compound. With a shake of her head, she pushed down the nervousness she felt and hit the doorbell.

“Well, hello beautiful. What can I do for you?”

Mia arched a brow at the guy who answered the door. “Hello. I'm actually here to see Gage. Is he around?”

“Lucky him. Yeah, upstairs, second floor. His room's the fifth one on the left. If it don't work out with him, you should hit me up,” he said with a wink.

Mia just shook her head and headed up to the second floor. She counted doors until she reached the fifth one on the left. She probably should knock but she didn't think about it. She just opened the door. The instant she did, she regretted it. Her entire world shattered around her. Gage was there, all right, but he wasn't alone. He sat on the edge of his bed while some brunette knelt in front of him with her mouth wrapped around his cock. A sound escaped her as she turned and fled back down the hall to the stairs.

Gage had his eyes closed while Carrie worked him with her mouth. She loved giving head and it felt damn good. Sometimes, when he closed his eyes, he imagined it was Mia instead of Carrie. A noise at the door reached him and his eyes snapped open just in time to see Mia turn and run. “Shit. Mia!” He pulled Carrie off him, tucked himself into his pants, and went after her.

Mia bolted down the stairs and out the front door. She heard Gage call her name but she ignored him. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she ran as fast as she could to the car she'd borrowed from her mother just so she could surprise Gage. All this time, she'd believed she meant something to him. All this time, she'd believed the way he'd been so attentive and protective meant he had feelings for her. God, how could she have been so stupid?

She was in the car and pulling away from the curb by the time Gage got outside. She swerved around him when he got into the street and gunned the engine to roar past him. In that moment, she wanted nothing to do with him.

She barely remembered the drive back to the docks where Julius was waiting for her. He'd gone shopping while she'd gone to see Gage.

  “What's wrong? What happened?”

“I'm so stupid. All dis time, he hasn't been attentive because he has feelings for me. He was doing it out of obligation, because we're Pard. I walked in on him getting his dick sucked by some brunette. I guess now I know why he never wanted me to visit him on campus.”

Julius hugged his sister. “Oh, cher. I'm so sorry.” He wanted to hurt Gage for this. How many fucking times did he think he could break Mia's heart before it shattered for good?

“I don't want to go home. Tina invited me to a party. I wasn't gonna go but you know what? Fuck it. I'm gonna go after all.”

“Dat's da spirit, sis. Go have some fun. Just don't have too much fun, you hear?”

“I'll try not to. Will you tell mama I'm spendin' da night at Tina's?” That way she wouldn't have to worry about going home early.

“A'course.” Julius hugged his twin again then watched her go.

  Gage

Gage tore through the streets on his way to the docks. He needed to get back to the compound and talk to Mia. He needed to explain. God, how could he have let her catch him in such a position? Fuck, how could he have put himself in that position to begin with? As soon as he reached the compound he went to the lean-to to see if Mia was there. He knew, without looking, that it was empty. Maybe she was at the house.

“You got a lot of fuckin' nerve showin' your face here right now.”

Gage actually blinked at Julius. He'd never heard the other leopard talk like that. “I'm lookin' for Mia. I need to talk to her.”

“Haven't you done enough, Gage? How many times do you tink you can break her heart before it's broken for good?”

“Look, Jules, I know I fucked up. I've fucked up a lot, but I want to fix it. I just need to talk to her.”

“She isn't here. She's at a friend's house for da night.” He didn't mention the party he knew his sister was going to.

Beau came out on the front porch and stood next to Julius. He'd been filled in on this latest incident as well. “Get da fuck out of here, Gage. You aren't welcome right now. Maybe not ever again. Dat'll be up to Mia, if she forgives you, yet again, for hurtin' her. If I had my way, she'd cut you off for good, but Mia's stubborn. Even if you aren't good for her, she'll keep lettin' you walk all over her because of how she feels.”

Gage wanted to scream at them but he knew he didn't have any right to. They were protecting their sister. “Will you at least tell her I was here?”

  They looked at each other.
“Yeah, we'll tell her. She'll wanna ring our necks if we don't and she finds out.”

Gage nodded and walked away. He wasn't paying attention and bumped into his Alpha on the way back to where he'd left the boat.

“You look like you just lost your best friend.”

  “I tink maybe I did.”

Caine cocked a brow. “What happened?”

Gage couldn't look him in the eye. “Mia surprised me wit' a visit on campus. Da only problem was, I wasn't alone. I've been seein' someone and she was dere...uh...givin' me head, and Mia saw us. I've really done it dis time. I've been tellin' myself I need to let her finish growin' up. She's still got another whole year of school after dis one, and after what happened to her, I don't want to overwhelm her wit' how I feel. But I tink...I tink I really messed up and I don't know how to fix it. I hurt her and dat's da last ting I ever wanted to do.”

Caine listened to him and took time to think on what Gage said before he responded. “Gage, you need to decide what you really want. Do you want to keep foolin' around wit' random girls? If so, you need to let Mia go so she can try to heal and move on. You can't keep playin' dis game wit' her, chasin' after her only when you do someting stupid like gettin' caught wit' some girl's mouth wrapped around your dick.”

Gage hung his head in shame. “My mama tinks Mia and I are mates, because of how protective I am of her and how crazy I got when Cole drugged her. But how can dat be? We're too young for dat, aren't we?”

Caine shook his head. “Age has no'ting to do wit' da mate bond. It's a connection between your beasts. Tell me someting. When you're wit' dis girl, are you really wit' her? In your head, is it her or is it Mia?”

  “Mia.” Gage didn't hesitate.

“Dere's your answer. If she wasn't your mate, you'd be able to separate your mind from her when wit' someone else. You'd really be wit' dem. Now, I don't know exactly how you're gonna fix dis mess you made wit' Mia, but I'm sure you'll figure it out.”

“If she'll ever talk to me again. She didn't even come home, she's at a friend's house, and I'm not welcome at da Lafluer's anymore.”

“She's kin, dey're gonna protect her as much as she'll let dem. If you really care about her, you'll find a way.” With that, Caine walked away.

Gage thought about what Caine said all the way back to campus. He needed to end things with Carrie...and he needed to figure out how in the fuck he was going to fix the damage he'd done to his relationship with Mia.

  Chapter Eleven

  Mia

Mia awoke to sunlight piercing her eyes. Her head ached, which told her she drank way too much considering she was a shifter and she should have already metabolized all the alcohol from her system. It took her several minutes to realize two things. The first, that she was naked beneath the sheet that covered her. The second, she wasn't alone. She turned her head and squinted until the person next to her came into focus.

She suddenly felt sick. Oh god. She'd gotten totally wasted at the party. She wished she could forget everything that happened, it would make this so much easier, but she couldn't. She'd started making out with Seth Conners, a senior who was on the football team and knew Gage from the year before. He also knew Cole. She started to shake at the realization that she'd slept with him. She didn't even know if they used protection. Her memory was too fuzzy on the details.

She crawled out of the bed and scrambled to find her clothes. She needed to get out of there before he woke up. She needed to go home and crawl into a hole and never come out again. How could she have let herself get so drunk she ended up sleeping with someone she had zero interest in?

  “Where ya going?”

The question was mumbled sleepily but she heard it anyway. “Home. Dis was a mistake.”

“You didn't seem to think so last night when you were all over me.”

Mia tugged her clothes on and turned to him. “Yeah, well, I was wasted. Dat won't happen again. Neither will dis.”

“Suit yourself, babe. I'm cool with it just being a random hookup. I gotta admit, I was a little surprised you were a virgin. I figured Gage was hitting that, with the way he was always in people's faces any time they even looked like they were going to hit on you.”

Mia snorted. “He's too busy getting his dick sucked by other girls.” She could hear the bitterness in her voice. She opened the door, glanced back, then left.

The sunlight made her eyes tear up as she reached the car. She dug around in the glove box until she found the sunglasses she knew were in there then she headed for the docks, and home.

Beau and Julius were sitting on the porch when Mia finally came home. They'd been discussing trying to track her down because it was late morning and she wasn't answering her phone. When they saw her disheveled look they both cocked a brow at her. “What happened to you?”

“I don't wanna talk about it.” She pushed past her twin and cringed a little because she knew they could smell another person's scent on her. And the stale odor of sex.

“Oh, hell, Mia. What did you do? Don't gimme dis 'I don't wanna talk about it', shit either. Da last time you pulled dat it was because you were sexually assaulted.” Julius narrowed his eyes at his twin.

“It's not like dat. I got drunk, really drunk...and had a one-night stand. Happy now?” She felt...ashamed by her actions. She'd always said she wanted to save her virginity until she got married, or at least until she was in a serious relationship, and then she went and had drunken sex.

“Who was it wit'?” Jules eyed her closely.

  “None of your business.”

“Talk to us, cher. We can see da shame in your eyes.” Beau moved to her and hugged her gently.

“It doesn't matter. I can't go back and change it. I got drunk and I had sex and I don't feel very good about it but I'm not gonna be like some girls and say he took advantage. Dat's not right. He was drinkin' too. I just want to go take a shower and crawl into bed for a while.”

“A'right. You go ahead and do dat. If you wanna talk, you know where we are.” Beau gave Julius a look when he started to argue. Mia needed her space.

“Thanks, Beau. I know you're both worried about me. I'm okay. Or I will be.” If she told herself that enough times she might start to believe it.

They watched her go. “Did you recognize the scent on her?”

Julius nodded. “Yeah. I know who she slept wit'. I'll make sure he doesn't go around spreadin' shit about her.”

  “Good.”

Mia stood under the hot spray and scrubbed until her skin felt raw. She felt dirty but there was no one but herself to blame for it. When the water started to turn cold she finally got out, dried off, and tugged on a pair of lounge pants and a tank top. She crawled into her bed and curled up on her side as silent tears began to slip down her cheeks.

Julius was walking past his sister's door when he heard a noise. He knew, without being told, that she was crying. He slipped in and crawled into the bed with her. “Talk to me, sis. I don't like seein' you hurtin'.”

Ever since they were little, any time she was upset, he would cuddle her and let her talk it all out until she felt better. “I feel dirty, Jules. I wanted my first time to be wit' someone I cared about. No, if I'm completely honest, I wanted it to be wit' Gage. He's da only one I want. Why doesn't he want me? Why aren't I good enough for him?”

“No, Mia. It's not like dat. He's a stupid boy who is lettin' da wrong head do all da tinkin'. He came by here, last night, lookin' for you. He knows he fucked up. I tink he does have feelin's for you, he just doesn't know what do about dem.”

“If dat's true, den why is he always screwin' other girls? A girl was on her knees with his dick in her mouth, Jules. Does dat really sound like someone who has feelin's for me?”

“Like I said, sis, he's tinkin' wit' da wrong head. If you'd been home when he came by, I really tink he would have fought me and Beau both just to get to you.”

Mia wanted to believe him but her heart hurt so much. “I tink I'm gonna t
ake a nap,” she said softly.

  “I'll stay til you're asleep.”

“Thanks.” She pulled the covers up until she was almost completely hidden from view, and slowly drifted off to sleep.

  Gage

Gage paced his room. He needed to talk to Mia. He needed to find a way to make things right with her. He knew the first thing he needed to do was stop fucking around. If he had any hope of ever being with Mia, he needed to straighten the fuck up. Mia was too important to him and he couldn't keep blaming it on hormones.

“Rumor has it you got caught wit' your pants down, literally, by a little redhead. Why do I get da feelin' it was Mia?” Remy leaned against the door frame leading into his brother's room and watched him pace.

“Because it was. I fucked up, Remy. Really fucked up. Mia surprised me by stoppin' by. Carrie was here. Mia walked in on her givin' me head.”

“Fuck, Gage. What in da hell is wrong wit' you? You know Mia's crazy about you, don't you? Anyone wit' eyes can see it. You got a great girl who worships you, and every damn time I turn around you're fuckin' around wit' some tramp who will spread her legs for anyone. I'd give my left arm to have someone devoted to me da way Mia is to you.”

“I know I fucked up, Remy. I already admitted it. I know I need to stop. I kept tinkin' I needed to give her time. She's a junior in high school, not even six months ago she was almost raped. I didn't tink, okay? I admit it. I wasn't tinkin'.”

“Oh, you were tinkin', but it was wit' da wrong head. So, how are you gonna fix dis mess you made?”

“I don't know. I know I'm not welcome at da Lafluer's right now, so I can't go dere and try to talk to her.”
